Why I Chose a .my.id Domain for My Portfolio
Why I chose iqballokman.my.id instead of a .com or .com.my domain and why the extension fits a personal portfolio better than a business website.

A domain is part of a personal brand
A domain name is more than a website address. For a personal portfolio, it becomes part of how people remember, share, and recognise your work.
When choosing a domain for my portfolio, I wanted something short, personal, and connected to my identity. That is why I chose iqballokman.my.id.
Why not use .com?
A .com domain is familiar and widely recognised, but short personal names are often unavailable. Finding an available .com can mean adding extra words, numbers, hyphens, or unusual spelling.
I wanted the domain to stay close to my actual name. iqballokman.my.id is easier to remember than a longer alternative and still looks professional when shared on a résumé, LinkedIn profile, or project documentation.
Why not use .com.my?
.com.my is a strong choice for Malaysian companies, online stores, and services focused on local customers. It clearly communicates that a business operates in Malaysia.
However, this website is not a company website. It is a personal portfolio where I share web development work, IoT projects, technical learning, achievements, and career experience.
I wanted a domain that feels personal first, while still keeping a connection to Malaysia.
Why .my.id fits better
The .my.id extension feels suitable for an individual portfolio. “My ID” can be read as a personal identity, which matches the purpose of the site.
It is short, distinctive, and gives the portfolio its own character. At the same time, the .my element keeps a subtle Malaysian connection without making the website feel limited to only one audience or market.
Does the domain extension affect SEO?
The domain extension alone does not decide whether a website ranks well on Google. Search visibility depends more on useful content, clear page titles, proper metadata, fast loading performance, mobile usability, internal links, and trustworthy references from other websites.
A .my.id domain can still be discovered by recruiters, collaborators, and visitors from anywhere in the world. The important part is maintaining a website that is clear, useful, and technically accessible to search engines.
Final thought
I chose iqballokman.my.id because it represents both my identity and my background. It is more personal than a generic domain, more flexible than a business-focused domain, and memorable enough to support my portfolio as it grows.
For me, it is not just a URL. It is a small but intentional part of my professional identity.
